A major part of our activities is our social gatherings.
We meet on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Tuesday of the month and as from the 1st of September 2023 have moved to a Winter/Summer schedule with sessions being held at our Walthew House HQ and online using the Webex meeting system. We have also introduced an all day Saturday session from 10am.

Walthew House:
1st Tuesday (7pm to 9.30pm)
2nd Saturday (10am till 4pm)
Webex:
3rd Tuesdays (7pm till 9.30pm)
Summer (1st March to 31st August)
Walthew House:
1st & 4th Tuesdays (7pm to 9.30pm)
2nd Saturday (10am till 4pm)
Webex:
3rd Tuesday (7pm till 9.30pm)
We aim to provide a means by which members can come together in a social atmosphere to discuss aspects of the hobby of mutual interest. At Walthew House, refreshments in the form of tea and coffee are available along with something from the resident biscuit tin.
However, it’s not just a place to come and chat as each session usually comes with a theme whether it be a radio related presentation, a practical session or an evening focused on our well equipped HF/V(U)HF station.
To help cover the cost of the room hire, there is an entrance fee of £2.00 per meeting.
Presentations
Delivered both in person and/or online, presentations have featured many diverse subjects ranging from Meteor scatter on 6 Metres, through FT8 and digital modes operation to Morse code. Speakers have included society members and guests from further afield.
We are always on the lookout for speakers who can deliver radio related presentations to the society either in person or through the Webex system. If you are aware of anyone who may fit the bill or indeed if you would be happy to speak about a radio topic of interest to you and which may interest others, please contact Evan M0TJU at any meeting or by email to treasurer@g8srs.co.uk. If you prefer a message can be left for Evan using our telephone number 07598 892795. Alternatively, if you have a radio related subject which you feel would be a good topic then again, please let Evan know.
Sometimes referred to as “Burnt Fingers Evenings“, these sessions involve construction where kits and other pieces of equipment useful to the radio enthusiast are put together. Soldering tuition and advice is provided by our experienced members and usually a fun evening is had by all.
Radio Sessions
Always popular sessions, members are able to use our fully equipped HF and VHF/UHF stations through a range of antennas situated on the roof of Walthew House.
Recently, the station has received considerable enhancement with addition of a new Icom IC7610 acquired from Lamco in Barnsley. The investment has been possible thanks to a considerable legacy left by our late former President Harry Arnfield G3LX in whose memory the station has been dedicated.
Our evening Walthew House meetings also feature a Morse code training session from 7pm (local) usually led by Evan M0TJU. There are a number of interested participants and if you’d like to join them please come along.
These sessions are aimed at being practical in nature but with our move to the bigger room we are aiming to provide a variety of activities from operating to equipment sales. With refreshments available there is also the opportunity to come along and socialise with fellow members. Of course, these sessions are also open to non-members too.
The society has invested in a Webex account allowing members to come together online as well as receiving presentations from speakers not normally able to visit the society at Walthew House. Simply visit our dedicated page for details of how to join in the sessions.
Many of the sessions have been recorded and been made available to members after the event.
