What is Amateur Radio?

Wikipedia quotes “amateur radio, also known as ham radio, is the use of the radio frequency spectrum for purposes of non-commercial exchange of messages, wireless experimentation, self-training, private recreation, radio sport, contesting, and emergency communications.” Of course, many will also be familiar with the Tony Hancock radio and TV sketch “The Radio Ham”.

Intrigued and want to learn more about the hobby of amateur radio, please take a look at our leaflet below and video produced by “Essex Ham” which describes what can be achieved.

As at the beginning of 2025, there is a progressive three stage structure of licencing in the UK, Foundation, Intermediate and finally Advanced. Licensing is administered by Ofcom, the government agency responsible for administering the radio spectrum in the UK and we recommend taking a look at their publication “Amateur Radio Guidance” which provides more information.

Courses aimed at providing the necessary tuition are available both online and by some local radio clubs. The RSGB (Radio Society of Great Britain) provide a means by which to find online and local courses through their “Course & Exam Finder” page. Essex Ham’s “HamTrain” regular online courses have a good reputation and we would urge anyone considering studying for their licence to visit their pages.

Here in Stockport we are no longer able to provide formal training courses, however we are able to provide support and advice. So, if you are considering embarking on one of the licence courses, please get in touch, or come along and see us. You’ll be made very welcome.
